Anytime people, anytime! * Iceland is undergoing a traumatic financial crisis. In just a few weeks, it has seen the collapse of its currency and its banking system. All three of Icelands major banks collapsed, following their difficulties in refinancing their short-term debt and a run on deposits in the United Kingdom. Iceland has accused the British Government of helping to bring down its troubled banking system after the United Kingdom used anti-terrorism legislation to freeze Icelandic assets in Britain. Following the suspension of trading in banking shares in Reykjavik, Landsbanki was formally taken into state ownership under emergency legislation. Landsbanki has since been placed in administration leaving around 300,000 UK-based savers with its online deposits business, Icesave, unable to withdraw their cash, although a 100% government guarantee does exists for savers deposits. UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown said that Icelandic banks had threatened to not honor obligations to British account holders, and declared Iceland as terrorist country and seized the banks assets. This caused the banks to go under and the Icelandic economy to implode. After having Landsbanki nationalized, the government of Iceland has turned to Russia to negotiate 4 billion euro loan to halt a fast-moving collapse of the countrys finance sector. "Russia wants to show that it's a financial power and is willing to help solve the global crisis," said Beat Siegenthaler, chief emerging markets strategist in London at TD Securities Ltd. ニュースアニメ「英とアイスランド 関係険悪に」 世界的な金融危機に直撃されているアイスランドと英国の関係が険悪になっている。アイスランド政府が預金流出を防ぐため英国民のネット口座を停止すると、英政府は対抗措置として反テロ法を持ち出し、英国内にあるアイスランドの銀行の資産を凍結。アイスランドのハーデ首相は「われわれはテロリストではない」と激怒。しかし、国家破綻の危機を招いた政府への市民の不信感も強く、ハーデ首相やオッドソン中央銀行総裁の辞任を求める動きも出ている。ダーリング英財務相は「アイスランド政府に英国民の預金者を保護する能力はない」と不信感をあらわにするなど、両国関係はますますこじれている。この両国の争いに顔を突っ込んできたのがロシアだ。アイスランドは資金不足に陥り、世界に金融支援を求めたところロシアが５０００億円程度の資金を提供してもよいとシグナルを送ってきたのだ。ロシアは今後、アイスランド以外にも石油でもうけた外貨を利用して金融危機にあえぐ国に金融支援という形で影響力を及ぼす可能性がある。
